Listening to music improves the quality of life for people with dementia. However, their access to music is often limited, as they increasingly struggle to operate everyday devices and experience a loss of initiative. In previous research, we developed and evaluated Clef’r: a smart and adaptive music player that gives direct access to favourite music, compensates for reduced initiative, and adapts to the user’s changing needs. Initial field evaluations showed that Clef’r is easy to use, supports well-being, and reduces caregiver workload.
This project investigates the technical and commercial feasibility of bringing Clef’r to market. Although the prototype demonstrates strong potential, key uncertainties remain regarding scalability of technology in real-world settings, pricing, market demand, and the viability of a startup. The project therefore focuses on (1) technical validation of the prototype in real-world settings, and (2) commercial feasibility of the product, which includes a market analysis and the development of a viable business model and business case.
The project will result in an evidence-based business case and a clear go/no-go recommendation for a Clef’r startup.
