Plasma ionization systems are widely used in the chemical industry for their high efficiency and low chemical consumption, with applications in surface modification, coating, sterilization, and water treatment. Growing demand for lowering total chemical consumption in the water technology industry has spurred interest in plasma-based systems for water recirculation, particularly in greenhouse horticulture. Additionally, the sector aims to achieve near-zero emissions by 2050 and reduce industrial drinking water use by 20% by 2035. Most applied solution for the second challenge is water reuse/recirculation, of which micropollutants and microbial contaminants build up is a problem to address. For greenhouses such micropollutants and microbial contaminants comprise basically pesticides and microorganisms like the Fungi "Fusarium".
The GreenPI project addresses this water reuse challenge with an innovative plasma-based water treatment system: the plasma Aquafender, developed by Bimco Holland. Unlike conventional approaches, this technology does not rely on added chemicals and is specifically designed to enable high-throughput, modular, and decentralized operation. Its adaptability makes it suitable for diverse water sources and modern greenhouse water management.
The Aquafender generates charged ions and reactive species through plasma ionization, which actively neutralize microorganisms and degrade organic pollutants, including aromatic compounds. The GreenPI project explores the system’s potential to substantially reduce Fusarium and other pathogens in greenhouse drain water while enhancing overall water quality. By developing innovative operational strategies and optimizing performance, the project aims to deliver scalable, chemical-free, and energy-efficient solutions for sustainable water management in greenhouse horticulture.
