The transition toward sustainable mobility is not progressing at the pace required to meet the ambitions of the European Green Deal and national climate objectives. Despite emission reductions in other sectors, mobility-related emissions remain high due to increasing travel demand, growing vehicle weight, and limited adoption of sustainable transport modes. This contributes to congestion, safety challenges, accessibility inequalities, and increasing transport poverty. At the same time, the complexity of the mobility transition is growing due to the interaction between technological, spatial, behavioral, economic, and governance dimensions, requiring systemic rather than monodisciplinary approaches.
This proposal introduces the Mobility Transition Lectors’ Platform, a national transdisciplinary collaboration between five Dutch universities of applied sciences. The platform aims to overcome fragmentation in practice-oriented mobility research by structurally connecting expertise in mobility, logistics, spatial planning, automotive, behavioral sciences, tourism, communication, and governance. Through this collaboration, the platform seeks to strengthen the knowledge infrastructure needed to address complex mobility challenges and accelerate implementation of integrated solutions.
The platform will develop a joint knowledge and innovation agenda, organize thematic Special Interest Groups, stimulate knowledge exchange, and strengthen collaboration with governments, industry, and academic partners. Key research themes include zero-emission mobility, inclusive urban accessibility, smart infrastructure, sustainable urban logistics, and mobility’s contribution to broad societal welfare.
By fostering transdisciplinary collaboration and practice-based research, the platform aims to increase the societal impact of applied research, strengthen connections between education, research, and practice, and contribute to a more sustainable, inclusive, and efficient mobility system in the Netherlands.
