(MYCO)coating boards aims to enhance the applicability of bio-based boards in the building sector by exploring the potential of using pure mycelium as a protective layer against fire and moisture. Bio-based boards face problems in meeting fire and moisture resistance standards in construction due to their high natural fibre content. Mycelium, known for its hydrophobic and fire-retardant properties in nature, presents a promising solution for expanding the use and durability of biobased boards in buildings.
The goal is to understand whether residual streams from the mycelium textile industry can be used as a coating for bio-based boards. Moreover, the research will help determine whether this natural coating is able to improve the hydrophobicity and fire resistance of bio-based boards while preserving their biodegradability and circularity. The project will investigate the best methods for applying the mycelium coating to ensure optimal adhesion and performance.
The project consortium, comprising SMEs, knowledge institutes, and a branch organization, ensures the project's success. By working closely with SMEs that are front runners at producing and developing these boards and mycelium materials, the project guarantees a high level of collaboration and practical relevance across all work packages.
Project Goals:
• Determine the optimal application methods for pure mycelium as a coating on the different boards.
• Evaluate the performance of the (myco)coated boards compared to uncoated boards, by analysing the fire resistance and hygroscopic properties.
• Create protocols for best coating application methods based on testing results.
• Develop prototypes of coated and non-coated biobased boards and applying them in actively used buildings, allowing us to analyse their performance and behaviour under real-life conditions.
• Investigate the effects of the myco-coating on the compostability/biodegradability of the boards.
