Eindrapportage
The world of robots is no longer science fiction. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is making the use of robots in the manufacturing and agri-food industries increasingly attractive. With a growing shortage of labor, it is crucial to improve productivity through robotics. Although the use of robots alongside humans is still at an early stage, its potential is enormous. The challenge is to ensure that human–robot collaboration is as safe as possible.
The ROBOsapiens project is aimed at developing insights and solutions for safe and natural interaction between robots and humans in manufacturing and Agri-tech environments, without the need for physical barriers. This creates challenges for the design and validation of safety, particularly because human behavior is an unpredictable factor for both robots and designers of robot safety systems. Within the project, Digital Twins and Artificial Intelligence are used to investigate how the behavior of humans and robots, with respect to robot safety, can be modelled in a digital environment (including the simulation of unsafe situations). The objective is to improve the safety of both robots and humans by better predicting how people (operators and bystanders) respond to robots while performing task-oriented activities, and how robots can anticipate these responses.
The ROBOsapiens project developed system design methodologies for the safe implementation of robots and created scenarios using Digital Twins to simulate, observe, and validate robot safety. In addition, the project delivered tangible results, including demonstrators applying Digital Twin technology for robot safety in the manufacturing industry and greenhouse horticulture.
Several research groups from Fontys University of Applied Sciences, Saxion University of Applied Sciences, and NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences collaborate with SMEs from the manufacturing and agricultural sectors, as well as TU/e EAISI and SME experts in Artificial Intelligence, Digital Twins, and human motion modelling. The project is supported by Fieldlab Robotics, Brainport Industries, High Tech NL, Mikrocentrum, and Breda Robotics. The knowledge developed within the project is embedded in education and research groups with more than 3 journal articles and international conference papers, involving 13 researchers and lecturer-researchers and approximately 100 students through projects, internships, and graduation assignments.
