Chiral molecules play a key role in bacteria, plants, animals and humans. The two enantiomers of chiral molecules have completely different biological responses in odor, taste, pharmaceuticals and the protection of crops. Furthermore, microbiologists, medical experts and analytical chemists are now becoming very interested in enantio-selective detection methods to enable chiral fingerprinting of metabolites and amino acids for biomarker disease diagnostics and monitoring. Although it is very well known that many receptors and structures in cells and biosystems are very specific regarding chiral antagonists, the research into chiral biomarkers has just started.
We want to integrate and advance two HighTech instrumental innovations, Single Photon Avalanche Diode (SPAD) imaging cameras with Mass Spectrometry-PhotoElectronChiralDichroism (MS-PECD) laboratory technology and apply advanced laser-based Molecular Spectroscopy to measure Enantiomeric Excess (ee) in biomarkers for diseases, like chiral Volatile Organic Compounds (c-VOCs) and chiral Amino Acids (c-AAs).
